So how do you know if you are in compliance?

Why must you comply ?
It is required of you as an employer with regard to on site electrical safety. The HSE carries out random visits by their Health & Safety Officers who can take legal action if you have failed to comply. The penalty being either a heavy fine or even imprisonment.
Your compliance is a requirement under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1999, The Health and Safety at Work act 1974 and The Provision and Use of Work Regulations 1992.
In addition, should the worst happen, without the correct documentation your insurance may be void.
What appliances must be tested regularly ?
ALL electrical appliances, including anything from a kettle to a PC and any equipment with a lead and plug - everything must be checked regularly and maintained whether old or new. Also you are required to have any appliance wired via a fused outlet on the wall i.e. Hand dryer,air conditioning unit,storage radiator, cooker etc.
Why must appliances be tested ?The Health and Safety Executive(HSE) has evidence that over 25% of all electrical accidents involve appliances connected to an electrical supply. As a result, regulations have become more stringent than ever regarding portable appliances( any appliance connected to a mains supply via a lead, and a lead and a plug), with the responsibility being on employers and managers to ensure that a SAFE working environment is maintained.

With the birth of the New 17th Edition of BS7671 IEE Wiring Regulations it becomes more important to have your electrical installation electrically checked. These checks ensure your home or business is safe to use electrically. Commercial and industrial installations need to be checked in order to comply with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. Domestic premises need to be checked to comply with insurance sub clauses.
These checks need to be completed regularly in order to ensure your premises is safe for both you and those who use your premises. It may also be a requirement for your insurance or local licencecing authority.
